Oscar-Winning Special Makeup Effects Artist Rick Baker Brings to Life The Clown Prince of Crime in New Life-Size The Joker Bust.

Musician and DC’s Young Animal Mastermind Gerard Way Designs Batman: Black & White Statues Set to Debut in 2018.

First-Ever “Doomsday Clock” Action Figures Will Strike Stores in 2018.

DC Collectibles, the award-winning line of collectibles from DC Entertainment, will celebrate 20 years of toy-making at this year’s American International Toy Fair in New York. To commemorate this milestone anniversary, DC Collectibles revealed huge plans for its 2018 lineup, including several high-profile collaborations such as a life-size bust of The Joker designed by one of Hollywood’s most celebrated special makeup effects artists, Rick Baker.

DC Collectibles also recruited My Chemical Romance frontman and DC’s Young Animal curator Gerard Way to put his own spin on DC’s iconic Batman and The Joker characters for the company’s longest-running statue line, Batman: Black & White. Other collectibles on tap for 2018 include new action figure sets based on Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s hit DOOMSDAY CLOCK comic book series and new variants for DC Artists Alley designer vinyls, plus several new additions to popular statue and action figure lines.

Best known for his work on Hollywood blockbusters such as An American Werewolf in London, Men in Black, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Planet of the Apes, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Star Wars, and the Thriller music video, among others, luminary special makeup effects artist Rick Baker has brought his monster-making talent to one of DC’s most iconic Super-Villains, The Joker. The Joker Bust by Rick Baker is designed, sculpted and painted by Baker and features the same spine-chilling attention to detail that can be expected from the Academy Award winner. Measured at 22.5″ tall, only 200 of these limited-edition busts will be produced, and each will be numbered. Fans can bring home this high-end collectible from DC Collectibles in October 2018 at a suggested retail price of $1000.00.

“DC Collectibles is always seeking out interesting artists from different industries to bring their unique art styles to DC’s popular characters, and we are thrilled to partner with Rick Baker on this sculpture,” explained Jim Fletcher, executive creative director of DC Collectibles. “From the disturbing eyes to the sinister smile, Rick did a masterful job capturing The Joker’s psychotic demeanor.”

“When DC Collectibles approached me about this project, I jumped at the chance to do something with The Joker,” said Baker. “The Joker is one of the most notorious Super-Villains of all time, and I had a blast depicting his twisted and demented personality through this bust. The DC Collectibles team was great to work with and gave me complete creative freedom to bring my version of the character to life.”

DC Collectibles has also tapped acclaimed musician and writer Gerard Way to design original iterations of The Joker and Batman for the company’s best-selling Batman: Black & White statue line. The eccentric character designs are based on sketches Way created for a past story idea and will now be brought to life as 7″ statues in 2018.

“I am extremely excited to have teamed up with the wonderful people of DC Collectibles to bring fans these visions of Batman and The Joker in physical and wonderfully monochromatic form,” said Way. “My ink and wash drawings of these two characters come from a pitch I had created, called ‘Kingdom of The Mad,’ which, in my opinion, is a very dark take on the characters– so seeing them in gorgeous black, white, and grey seems very fitting. I hope fans enjoy these different takes on the characters, and I am honored to now be a part of the Batman: Black & White family.”

“Our Batman: Black & White statue line has always been a great avenue to try new ideas and welcome new artists into the DC Collectibles fold,” said Fletcher. “Gerard’s indie art style is a perfect fit for this series and offers a fresh take on Batman and The Joker that we’ve never seen before.”

DC Collectibles will also debut new DOOMSDAY CLOCK action figures in 2018, based on Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s critically acclaimed comic book series. The 7″ figures will release in sets of two and will include fan-favorite WATCHMEN characters Dr. Manhattan, Ozymandias, Rorschach and the Comedian, plus two new DC universe characters – Mime and Marionette-created in DOOMSDAY CLOCK.

Capitalizing on excitement for the upcoming DC Artists Alley designer vinyl line, DC Collectibles also revealed new variants for the Hainanu “Nooligan” Salque and Sho Murase waves of figures. Black-and-white editions will be offered for Nooligan’s standard designs of Batman, The Joker and Harley Quinn, and special holiday designs will be offered for Murase’s Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn and Catwoman characters. These new variants join the already-announced standard and black-and-white versions of the Chris Uminga wave that debuts in June. Uminga’s wave will be followed by Nooligan’s vinyls in September and Murase’s in November.

“The feedback for our upcoming DC Artists Alley line has been fantastic,” noted Fletcher. “The first few Chris Uminga figures have already sold out at the retailer level, and we can’t wait for them to hit stores this summer. We hope fans embrace the different variant editions for each artist and collect them all!”

Additional collectibles debuting in 2018 include new DC Bombshells offerings, such as a Batman and Catwoman Deluxe statue, a statue featuring The Joker’s Daughter and a Nurse Harley and The Joker action figure 2-pack. There will also be new character additions to the highly anticipated DC Essentials action figure line and best-selling DC Designer Series statue series.

Watch Rick Baker Sculpt The Joker Bust from DC Collectibles

Rick Baker Sculpting The Joker

What happens when you bring one of the most highly regarded special effects makeup artists together with one of comics’ most terrifying super-villains? You get the frightening and absolutely spectacular DC Gallery Edition Joker Bust from the Academy Award-winning Rick Baker and DC Collectibles. Landing in stores next week, the high-end collectible is reproduced in 1:1 scale, allowing for an unprecedented amount of detail, intricacy and realism. It melds the vivid imagination of the makeup artist behind movies like Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes, An American Werewolf in London, The Nutty Professor, Men in Black and TV’s Beauty and the Beast with the legacy of DC’s Batman universe resulting in a must-see piece for fans of the Dark Knight and Baker’s legendary work.

How the project came about is a lesson for some other great companies out there; let your artists run with their creativity. Here is what Rick said about the beginnings of his work on this bust.

“It started when I visited my daughter Veronica, who works at DC. I went through the Collectibles department there and was impressed by everything, and one of the guys asked if I’d consider doing something for them. I gave him what can only be called a not-very-enthusiastic maybe. I’d just retired from the film industry, and one of the main reasons I retired is that I’d gotten fed up with too many different opinions, especially from people who didn’t know what they were talking about. I was looking forward to just doing my own thing and not having to deal with that.

I assumed DC had very specific things they wanted and that I’d be very art directed, and that’s not what I wanted to do. Also, most of what I saw were on the small side and I don’t do little very well, so I figured it would never happen.

Later, I was contacted seriously about it, so I decided to come down and talk to them about it. But I kind of warned my daughter. I said, “The only way I would do this is if they just let me do it without any input on their part, and I know they’re never going to agree to that. So, this probably isn’t going to happen.”

But I went down and talked to them, and I said that I don’t really do small, I’d like to do a 1:1, and I’m going to bring you a finished piece and that’s the first time you’re going to see it. I thought for sure they’d say no and tell me to get out of here, but to my surprise they said, “That’s kind of what we’re looking for. We want a different artist’s take on it.”

So, I told them I wanted to do the Joker because he’s the coolest, and they said that was okay. I wanted adequate time, and they told me they didn’t need it for a year and a half—and I said, “Well, I don’t want to take that long!”

Basically, everything I asked for, they said yes to, so I had to do it.”

DARK NIGHTS: METAL BATMAN: THE MERCILESS STATUE

based on the art of GREG CAPULLO

sculpted by NEOBAUHAUS

“My whole life, I had been afraid of doing what I knew needed to be done. Afraid to give all of myself to the battle. The helmet showed me that my codes and rules were naive. That all that truly mattered was victory. And now I would finally take it for myself.”

Rocking into our world from the pages of DARK NIGHTS: METAL comes the bloodthirsty Merciless. A nightmarish fusion of Batman and Ares, this member of the Dark Knights is a supremely powerful warmonger, taking all of the best tactical skills of Batman and pairing them with the might of Ares.

This 8.46″ tall polyresin statue is menacingly detailed based on the art in the miniseries. From the stunning, amplified Ares Bat-helmet that corrupted the Caped Crusader to the chains highlighting the blazing blue armor to the God Killer sword, it will command the room no matter where it stands.

DC DESIGNER SERIES: BOMBSHELL HARLEY QUINN AND THE JOKER BY ANT LUCIA ACTION FIGURES

While their love may never fade, The Joker and Harley Quinn are splitting up. Or more accurately, fans can pick up these two DC DESIGNER SERIES: ANT LUCIA figures singly. Designed to evoke the legendary V-J Day photo “The Kiss,” fans can now choose sides between DC’s most infamous crime couple or pair them together.

Harley is decked out in a retro nurse’s outfit, wonderfully reminiscent of the women helping the good fight of the Bombshells era. She comes with two interchangeable heads, so fans can present her smiling or with a kiss head, ready to re-create the iconic embrace.

Harley’s beloved, The Joker, is in throwback sailor’s garb, albeit with a custom twist—touches of green, purple and black. His face may show a bit of bewilderment from the moment, but we’ll leave it to our fans to guess what he’s really thinking about the smooch.

For the latest statue in the line, the team drew inspiration from Frank Cho’s variant cover for HARLEY QUINN #50. One can see a bit of panic in Harley’s eyes as she scrambles to rid herself of the bomb and, in the process, save the ducks adorning her custom nameplate stand. This piece is a great addition to the collection of anyone who loves Harley, old-timey bombs and street-crossing waterfowl.

based on the art of SEAN MURPHY

sculpted by KAREN PALINKO AND ZIGGY HALFPEPPER

What if the greatest villain in Gotham City was not The Joker, but the Batman? That question is at the core of the epic eight-part limited series BATMAN: WHITE KNIGHT, which features the writing and art of Sean Murphy.

This limited-run Batman Black & White statue presents a highly detailed version of Murphy’s Joker, a nuanced, populist hero to the working men and women of Gotham. Trading his suit for streetwear, this Joker—known as Jack Napier in his moments of sanity—fights to end corruption and brutality from the city’s ruling class.
