Oscar-Winning Special Makeup Effects Artist Rick Baker Brings to Life The Clown Prince of Crime in New Life-Size The Joker Bust.

Musician and DC’s Young Animal Mastermind Gerard Way Designs Batman: Black & White Statues Set to Debut in 2018.

First-Ever “Doomsday Clock” Action Figures Will Strike Stores in 2018.

DC Collectibles, the award-winning line of collectibles from DC Entertainment, will celebrate 20 years of toy-making at this year’s American International Toy Fair in New York. To commemorate this milestone anniversary, DC Collectibles revealed huge plans for its 2018 lineup, including several high-profile collaborations such as a life-size bust of The Joker designed by one of Hollywood’s most celebrated special makeup effects artists, Rick Baker.

DC Collectibles also recruited My Chemical Romance frontman and DC’s Young Animal curator Gerard Way to put his own spin on DC’s iconic Batman and The Joker characters for the company’s longest-running statue line, Batman: Black & White. Other collectibles on tap for 2018 include new action figure sets based on Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s hit DOOMSDAY CLOCK comic book series and new variants for DC Artists Alley designer vinyls, plus several new additions to popular statue and action figure lines.

Best known for his work on Hollywood blockbusters such as An American Werewolf in London, Men in Black, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Planet of the Apes, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Star Wars, and the Thriller music video, among others, luminary special makeup effects artist Rick Baker has brought his monster-making talent to one of DC’s most iconic Super-Villains, The Joker. The Joker Bust by Rick Baker is designed, sculpted and painted by Baker and features the same spine-chilling attention to detail that can be expected from the Academy Award winner. Measured at 22.5″ tall, only 200 of these limited-edition busts will be produced, and each will be numbered. Fans can bring home this high-end collectible from DC Collectibles in October 2018 at a suggested retail price of $1000.00.

“DC Collectibles is always seeking out interesting artists from different industries to bring their unique art styles to DC’s popular characters, and we are thrilled to partner with Rick Baker on this sculpture,” explained Jim Fletcher, executive creative director of DC Collectibles. “From the disturbing eyes to the sinister smile, Rick did a masterful job capturing The Joker’s psychotic demeanor.”

“When DC Collectibles approached me about this project, I jumped at the chance to do something with The Joker,” said Baker. “The Joker is one of the most notorious Super-Villains of all time, and I had a blast depicting his twisted and demented personality through this bust. The DC Collectibles team was great to work with and gave me complete creative freedom to bring my version of the character to life.”

DC Collectibles has also tapped acclaimed musician and writer Gerard Way to design original iterations of The Joker and Batman for the company’s best-selling Batman: Black & White statue line. The eccentric character designs are based on sketches Way created for a past story idea and will now be brought to life as 7″ statues in 2018.

“I am extremely excited to have teamed up with the wonderful people of DC Collectibles to bring fans these visions of Batman and The Joker in physical and wonderfully monochromatic form,” said Way. “My ink and wash drawings of these two characters come from a pitch I had created, called ‘Kingdom of The Mad,’ which, in my opinion, is a very dark take on the characters– so seeing them in gorgeous black, white, and grey seems very fitting. I hope fans enjoy these different takes on the characters, and I am honored to now be a part of the Batman: Black & White family.”

“Our Batman: Black & White statue line has always been a great avenue to try new ideas and welcome new artists into the DC Collectibles fold,” said Fletcher. “Gerard’s indie art style is a perfect fit for this series and offers a fresh take on Batman and The Joker that we’ve never seen before.”

DC Collectibles will also debut new DOOMSDAY CLOCK action figures in 2018, based on Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s critically acclaimed comic book series. The 7″ figures will release in sets of two and will include fan-favorite WATCHMEN characters Dr. Manhattan, Ozymandias, Rorschach and the Comedian, plus two new DC universe characters – Mime and Marionette-created in DOOMSDAY CLOCK.

Capitalizing on excitement for the upcoming DC Artists Alley designer vinyl line, DC Collectibles also revealed new variants for the Hainanu “Nooligan” Salque and Sho Murase waves of figures. Black-and-white editions will be offered for Nooligan’s standard designs of Batman, The Joker and Harley Quinn, and special holiday designs will be offered for Murase’s Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn and Catwoman characters. These new variants join the already-announced standard and black-and-white versions of the Chris Uminga wave that debuts in June. Uminga’s wave will be followed by Nooligan’s vinyls in September and Murase’s in November.

“The feedback for our upcoming DC Artists Alley line has been fantastic,” noted Fletcher. “The first few Chris Uminga figures have already sold out at the retailer level, and we can’t wait for them to hit stores this summer. We hope fans embrace the different variant editions for each artist and collect them all!”

Additional collectibles debuting in 2018 include new DC Bombshells offerings, such as a Batman and Catwoman Deluxe statue, a statue featuring The Joker’s Daughter and a Nurse Harley and The Joker action figure 2-pack. There will also be new character additions to the highly anticipated DC Essentials action figure line and best-selling DC Designer Series statue series.

DC Collectibles Reveals New Products Ahead of SDCC

Published

on

Burbank, CA (July 18, 2018) – DC Collectibles, the award-winning line of collectibles from DC Entertainment, will make a huge splash at Comic-Con International: San Diego with exciting new statue and action figure reveals, headlined by a stunning statue series based on Warner Bros. Pictures’ highly anticipated Aquaman film, hitting theaters December 21, 2018. DC Collectibles will also expand its bestselling Batman: The Animated Series action figure line and add new artists to the company’s cutting-edge DC Artists Alley designer vinyl collection. New character additions are also planned for several of DC Collectibles’ most popular action figure and statue lines, including DC Bombshells, Batman: Black & White, DC Essentials and more.

Making waves just in time for the King of Atlantis’ big-screen debut, DC Collectibles will release three new statues based on the character appearances in the upcoming Aquaman film. Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Amber Heard’s Mera and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta will be re-imagined with impeccable attention to detail as individual 12” sculptures. The statues will come aboard store shelves beginning November 2018.

DC Collectibles will also add new characters to its fan-favorite Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS) action figure line and debut the company’s first-ever Batcycle, as seen in the award-winning TV series. Scaled for 6 action figures, the Batcycle measures 9.25 long and includes a variety of light-up features and two free-spinning wheels that enable the bike to turn. The double-sided display base allows fans to “park” the Batcycle in the Batcave or on the streets of Gotham City. The Batcyle set will also include one BTAS Batman action figure that features two interchangeable helmet heads, new articulation points that allow the character to “ride” the Batcycle and a poseable cape. DC Collectibles will also release new individual BTAS action figures in 2019, including Two-Face, Gray Ghost, H.A.R.D.A.C. and Scarecrow. Each character will feature unique accessories based on their appearance in the animated series.

In addition to new Batman: The Animated Series action figures, DC Collectibles will also debut 6action figures based on the Justice League animated series that aired from 2001 to 2004. The Justice League animated figures will be available exclusively for members of the DC Universe digital subscription service beginning in fall 2018.

“Our animated action figures are a staple of DC Collectibles, and we’re so excited to expand the line into the Justice League animated series and add more Batman: The Animated Series characters that fans have been asking for,” said Jim Fletcher, executive creative director of DC Collectibles at DC Entertainment. “As this line continues, we are constantly challenging ourselves to think of new ways to bring the animated series to life. We hope fans enjoy giving their figures a ride on the new Batcycle and recreating their favorite scenes from the show with the intricately detailed display base.”

Also in 2019, DC Collectibles will welcome two new popular artists—Joe Ledbetter and Chrissie Zullo— to the DC Artists Alley line. Both artists will bring their unique art style to the DC Universe, re-imagining some of DC’s most iconic characters as 7 designer vinyl figures. Ledbetter, known for his distinct bold lines and vibrant palette, will put his signature spin on Batman, Penguin, Catwoman and Robin. Zullo will debut her dreamy and whimsical transformations of Batgirl, Hawkgirl, Supergirl and Wonder Woman.

“I’m a huge Batman fan and to have the opportunity to work with DC Collectibles on a set of Batman characters is a huge deal in my world,” said Ledbetter. “I just love the idea of a bat in a Batman suit, a penguin as the Penguin, etc. There’s something there that’s quite funny and interesting and really excites me. I like to think that these animal Batman characters inhabit a parallel universe where Gotham City is entirely populated by anthropomorphic critters, including the Caped Crusader himself. I think the fun, enthusiasm and love of Batman, Robin, Penguin and Catwoman will shine through on these designer toys and I hope they find a special place on collector’s shelves.”

“Working on DC Artists Alley is a total dream come true,” said Zullo. “Not only do I get to work with the great people at DC Collectibles and an incredible sculptor, Irene Matar, but the process of seeing my drawings come to life in 3-D was so much fun and such a great collaborative experience. I knew I wanted my designs to be almost animated, full of life and able to highlight each character’s personality traits, while still keeping the designs playful and confident. I think everyone who worked on this project nailed it, and I can’t wait for fans to see them in person.”

Ledbetter and Zullo’s DC Artists Alley figures will follow the 2018 designer vinyls illustrated by Chris Uminga, HaiNaNu “Nooligan” Saulque and Sho Murase. Fans attending San Diego Comic-Con can pick up the convention exclusive of Uminga’s DC Artists Alley Batman figure in three different variant editions at the Entertainment Earth Booth #2343 or pre-order the figures online here.

On tap for 2019, DC Collectibles will release a new Bat-Family Multi-Part Statue featuring Batman, Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing and Red Hood. The statue set is designed by the award-winning DC Collectibles design team and includes the same versatile bases as the New Teen Titans Multi-Part Statue set that debuts in August 2018. Fans can display one or a few of their favorite Bat-Family characters independently, or for those wanting to own the whole set, the bases fit perfectly together to create one cohesive image. Batman is the first character to hit shelves in March 2019 and the remaining characters will be released throughout the year.

Additional 2019 releases include a Batman: Black & White Batman statue based on the acclaimed BATMAN: WHITE KNIGHT artwork by Sean Murphy, new DC Essentials action figures and new character additions to the DC Bombshells and DC Cover Girls statue lines.

Thanks to Instagramer (is that a word?), GeekofNerd, we have our first look at statues from the upcoming Aquaman film. Not only that, but we get our first look at Black Manta from the film, and he looks simply outstanding!

Scrolling through the images on the Instagram page you can saw Aquaman (in a very Aquaman looking costume), Black Manta, and Mera! No word on when these will be available, but it is a safe bet to assume around the time the film debuts, or a bit afterward. Also no word on pricing. It is also probably a safe bet that these items will be on display at San Diego Comic-Con 2018.
