Grant Morrison and Howard Porter’s JLA Run (1997-2000)
Grant Morrison and Howard Porter’s 42-issue run on JLA revitalized the concept of the Justice League for the late 1990s, steering away from the revolving-door membership of the ’90s “B-list” teams and returning to the “Big Seven” lineup: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash (Wally West), Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner), Aquaman, and the Martian Manhunter. Morrison treated the League not just as superheroes, but as modern, secular deities, mythic archetypes who represented the pinnacle of human (and superhuman) potential. The tone was grand, high-concept, and often surreal, focusing on immense, world-ending threats that necessitated the most powerful heroes working in concert.
The run kicked off with the seminal “New World Order” arc, introducing the Hyperclan, a team of powerful aliens who initially posed as heroes but were soon revealed to be White Martians aiming to conquer Earth by seducing humanity with utopian ideals. This storyline immediately established the League’s core purpose: defending the purity of human will and imagination. Morrison followed this with a relentless stream of cosmic and dimensional threats, including the sentient weapon Amazo, the time-traveling villain Knowman, and the return of the ancient New Gods villain, Darkseid. The focus was always on massive, escalating stakes, cementing the JLA as the Earth’s absolute first line of defense, dealing with problems that no other heroes could handle, often with a philosophical or existential twist woven into the action.
