Batman: No Man’s Land is a major crossover storyline that ran through DC Comics’ Batman titles in 1999. It picks up after the devastating earthquake from the previous arc, Cataclysm, which left Gotham City in ruins. With the city crumbling and deemed uninhabitable, the U.S. government decides to cut its losses and declares Gotham a “No Man’s Land.” All bridges are destroyed, the city is sealed off, and Gotham is essentially erased from the map. The government evacuates, law enforcement pulls out, and the city is left to descend into chaos.

In this new lawless Gotham, gang warfare erupts. Criminals like the Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, and others carve out sections of the city and rule them with fear and brutality. Batman vanishes for a time, and during his absence, other characters—like Oracle (Barbara Gordon), Huntress, and Commissioner Gordon—do what they can to maintain some semblance of order. When Batman returns, he’s determined to reclaim the city block by block. This battle for territory becomes symbolic of a deeper struggle for the soul of Gotham itself.

The story explores themes of survival, loyalty, identity, and redemption. Gotham’s remaining citizens must fend for themselves, living without power, food, or hope. Heroes and villains alike are tested by this brutal new world. One of the most significant developments is the introduction of Cassandra Cain, who takes up the mantle of Batgirl for the first time. The story also marks the first main-continuity appearance of Harley Quinn, who crosses over from the animated series.

No Man’s Land was a lengthy and complex storyline, originally told across multiple titles and issues, but it has since been collected in trade paperbacks and omnibus editions. It heavily influenced later Batman media, including The Dark Knight Rises, where Gotham is similarly isolated, and season five of the Gotham TV series. Even the Arkham City and Arkham Knight video games borrow from the core concept of a city abandoned to chaos. The storyline stands as one of the most ambitious and gritty arcs in Batman’s publishing history.
