Mattel is officially ramping up its presence on toy shelves ahead of the major license shift, and one of the most intriguing additions to the lineup is the DC Premier Batman & Green Lantern Hal Jordan versus Mr. Freeze 3-Action Figure Pack. Featuring an interactive color, change gimmick, (which I totally missed in the review) this set attempts to bridge the gap between durable play-line functionality and collector-level detail.
I recently picked up this “Cryo 3-Pack” to put it through its paces. Check out my full video review below to see how the figures look under the studio lights, and how the articulation holds up.
The Specs & Scaling
While Mattel’s standard DC Premier single figures boast a 6.5-inch scale, this multi-pack offers some varied sizing to give the villain a proper presence. The exclusive Hal Jordan (currently only available in this set) and the thermal-gear Batman sit right at 6.5 inches, while the scientist-turned-villain Mr. Freeze towers over them at an impressive 7.25 inches tall.
For articulation, Mattel went all out with 18 movable joints, including double-jointed sections, yielding a total of 26 points of articulation per figure. This allows for excellent, dynamic combat posing on your shelf that far surpasses standard retail play-line releases.
Accessories
The accessory count is hefty for a retail 3-pack. Batman comes outfitted in his IceBreaker Thermal Gear and carries a projectile-firing blaster, while Hal Jordan features a translucent ice-carving Chainsaw Construct that manually morphs into a Capture Clamp.
The main selling point, however, is the color-change feature. By filling Mr. Freeze’s CryoCannon with ice-cold water, you can spray the caped crusader and the emerald knight to watch their faces “freeze,” temporarily shifting their skin tones to an icy blue. The set also includes five “ice shell” effects that clip onto the figures to simulate being frozen solid. As an added bonus for those who picked up the Bat-Link Batmobile, all three major weapons can mount directly onto the vehicle’s hood.
The Verdict: Hit or Pass?
At a retail price of $42.99, Mattel is delivering a lot of plastic, solid articulation, and great character scaling. While the color-change feature is definitely geared toward younger fans, the sculpts and presentation have a ton of appeal for long-time collectors looking for an alternative DC display.
The set is officially tracking as Out of Stock online at Target after a massive wave of buying over the last month, so you’ll want to check your local brick-and-mortar shelves to secure one.
